Women’s charity survey shows 85% of people have experienced domestic abuse

A survey carried out by Independent Choices, a charity which supports victims of domestic abuse in Greater Manchester, has shown that 85% of respondents had suffered or knew someone who had suffered domestic abuse.  And Sam Priestley, CEO of Independent Choices, has warned that cuts to funding for vital women’s services will endanger the lives of women and children living with abuse. An update from New Zealand

A very good friend of mine emigrated to New Brighton in New Zealand a few years ago. I received the following email from her on Tuesday. Although the after-effects of the earthquate in New Zealand have ceased to be reported in the mainstream media, for many residents the horror of  what they’ve experienced is still a living nightmare.  My friend, Jackie Thomas, writes with typical good humour and wit, but the horror of what she and so many others are experiencing is evident.  Jackie has given her permission for me to reproduce her email in full, and her moving, simple account of life after the quake follows.
